Barbecuing on the go! Portable barbecues reviewed

The back garden has always been the prime spot for a barbecue - but it's no longer the only spot.

Portable barbecues make grilling on the go a real possibilty, so whether you're camping, caravanning or just hitting the beach for a day in the sun, you never need go without that great barbecue taste!*

Cadac Deluxe Safari ChefAnd even if you intend to keep barbecuing in the garden, portable barbecues have the advantage of taking up less space and being generally cheaper than their elder siblings. Certainly for a small outdoor space, a portable barbecue like the ones featured below can be ideal.

Cadac Deluxe Safari Chef

Versatility is key to the success of the Cadac Safari Chef. Despite its tiny size (it stands at around two feet tall!) it packs in an incredible five interchangeable cooking surfaces, meaning you can bbq, boil, roast, grill and fry - a great bonus for any camper!

Of course you can only do one at a time, for portable barbecues tend to only have one burner, but at £59 this barbecue represents tremendous value.

It's ultra-lightweight, compact (the barbecue's three legs fold away underneath) and comes with a very useful carry-bag that makes transportation so easy.

The Weber Baby Q (100)Weber Q (200) / Weber Baby Q (100)

The Weber Q, and its little brother the Baby Q (pictured, left) have become almost synonymous with the term 'portable barbecue'. Almost identical but for size, these two grilling machines are very stylish and highly desirable, decked out in sleek black and silver casing.

Both come with sturdy handles which makes carriage easy, and the slightly larger Q even comes with it's own fold-down preparation tables.

Trolley attachments also add to the versatility of the Weber portable range, meaning they can be transformed into a regular back-yard barbie in the blink of an eye.

The Weber Q and Baby Q can be purchased via the Calor BBQ Shop

Campingaz Party GrillCampingaz Party Grill

A fun and practical solution to barbecuing on the go, the Campingaz Party Grill is one of the most affordable gas barbecues on the market.

It can be used as a barbecue or as a conventional stove straight over the flame. It is easy to clean, transport and store - plus it comes with its own special zip-up storage pouch! The Party Grill weighs just 2.5kg, and costs only £25!

The downside of course, is that such a tiny barbecue has precious little cooking space, and a relatively low-powered burner. Indeed the name of the product is somewhat misguiding - if you tried to cater for a party on this grill you'd be seriously short on room. However, at a price of just £25, it's not unfeasible that you could have three or four of these barbecues dotted around and let your guests cook for themselves!

OMC Porta-ChefOMC Porta-Chef

The Canadian built Porta-Chef features the largest cooking area of all the featured portable barbecues, with a whopping 2323cm2 to grill on - more than some full size barbecues!

While the Porta-Chef may not be the most compact of grilling machines, it is well built to ensure that carriage and storage are as simple as possible. The four legs snap into position when needed, and the barbecue comes with a convenient carry strap.

Its size and weight arguably make it less viable as a portable option than the other choices featured here, and it's not going to win many prizes for style - however, if you are cooking for a party of people, this barbecue can sure hold it's food.

The OMC Porta-Chef is available in the Calor BBQ shop

*Please remember, if you're planning to have a barbecue on the beach or in a public park you should always check with local authorities that it is safe and legal to do so.
