Wonder how your neighbour keeps on barbecuing even when it's cool outside? We might just have the answer.

Patio heaters allow you to enjoy an evening's barbecuing even when the sun isn't beating down on your back garden - and getting one now means you'll be able to enjoy outdoors eating all year round. You'll even be able to follow Phil Vickery's example and barbecue your Christmas turkey!

Here we profile three popular patio heaters which suit a range of tastes, gardens - and budgets.

Mirage Curve Heat 'n' Light

The Mirage Curve Heat 'n' Light (pictured, top right) scores highly for both innovation and style. It is one of only a handful of patio heaters which features a gas powered light beneath its gas burner, meaning not only will it keep you warm while day turns to night - you'll also be able to see who you are talking to!

Typical of the Universal Innovations range, the Heat 'n' Light looks fantastic. It has a sleek, almost futuristic feel to it, and the silver and charcoal colour scheme works in pretty much any outdoor space.

Verdict: For less than £250, the Mirage can solve your garden heating and lighting worries. For modern houses and gardens it's a top choice.

For those of you with less space or a lower budget, a table top heater could prove ideal.

Rather than heating an expansive area, the lower powered table tops heat only the immediate area around them - but if you and your guests are sitting around the same table it's more than enough to keep you cosy. The heater sits atop your table, with the Calor cylinder nestled under the table (the hose passes easily through the parasol hole).

The Enders table top comes in either stainless steel (shown left) or green, so you can even tailor your choice to suit your garden table.

Royal Regency

The Royal Regency (right) is a full size patio heater with a 12.5Kw input, making it more powerful than the Heat 'n' Light.

What also sets the Royal Regency apart is its style. In stark contrast to the Mirage, the Regency is designed to look like a Victorian gas lamp, right down to the verdigris finish. It makes the ultimate complement to a rustic country property.

The Royal Regency will set you back around £350.

Verdict: If you have an old country house and garden, this is the patio heater for you. Lends real atmosphere to your outdoor space.
