BBQ Gadgets

Our top five barbecue gadgets from the 2006 season...

photo of the grillslinger1. The Grillslinger

The original grillslinger - guaranteed to have men all over the world drawing barbecue tongs from their side like Clint Eastwood and John Wayne rolled into one.

Much more than just a macho play thing though, the grillslinger is a brilliantly practical piece of kit.

Slung from your waist like a cowboy's holster, the grillslinger carries a knife, tongs and burger flipper - freeing up valuable space around your barbecue.

It also allows you to add your own implements to the spare pockets, or store your mobile phone safely away from the heat of the barbie.

It is probably the most famous barbecue recipe in the world - but 'beer can chicken' might just have to change its name.

That's because, with the Poultry Roaster from Weber, there's no need to use a beer can at all. We used the roaster in May's video recipe and wouldn't be without one now. It's easy to use, can be cleaned and re-used and there's no chance of catching yourself on a rusty old can.

'Weber Roaster Chicken' it is then!

The 'Reveo Marinader' will truly revolutionise your barbecuing habits! Simply plug it in, put meat and marinade into the see-through container and flick a switch - then sit back and admire as your food is marinated in minutes.

The Reveo uses a unique system to smother your food in flavour. Just a few minutes in the Reveo is the equivalent of 24 hours marinading in the fridge!

Currently the Reveo is only available in America, but a European version looks likely to be launched at some point in 2007. We'll be first in the queue to get our hands on one!

Less of a gadget, more a piece of wood - but we'd all do well not to underestimate these cedar smoking planks.

When it comes to barbecue smoking, few do it better than Brinkmann, and so it proves again. These planks can be soaked in beer, water, cider, wine - pretty much anything - and when placed on the barbecue they'll give off plumes of smoke which infuse your food with flavour.

Don't worry about the wood burning - that's the whole idea. You can still use the planks again and again until they've diminished to nothing.

We've reviewed a number of digi-thermometers, none better than this one from Weber.

It's small, dependable and really easy to use - and as with all things Weber, it really looks the part. All the credentials to make a fantastic gadget!

Insert the probe into the meat you are grilling, select a temperature and then sit back and put your feet up. When the food is cooked you'll be alerted by a beeping on the tiny remote - simple!

Many of these brilliant BBQ gadgets are available to buy in the Calor BBQ Shop.
