Organic barbecuing

Organic barbecuing

More people than ever are barbecuing with organic ingredients - meat and vegetables that have not been treated with any kind of chemical product or process. But just why are so many people turning to organics?

It's good for you

If you are planning on devouring a huge rump steak doused in a sugary barbecue sauce, it may ease your guilt to team it with some healthy organic veg! It is understood to contain more vitamin C than non-organic food, as well as more calcium, iron and magnesium, which are essential minerals for the body.

Organic food also contains no sweeteners, additives, genetically modified ingredients or pesticides.

Animal welfare

The organic movement doesn't just make things better for us - it means a better life for livestock. For meat to be branded as organic, animals must be kept free from malnutrition, physical discomfort, disease and fear - amongst other things.

Animals must also be fed an organic diet.

The Soil Association has shown concern at the use of antibiotics in farm animals and the possible effects this could have on humans. Therefore, to be fully accepted as organic, meat has to come from animals who remain clear of antibiotics as well.

Environmental benefits

So it's good for us consumers, good for the animals - and seemingly good for the environment too. The lack of chemical treatment on the food leads to lowered levels of spray pollution, less carbon dioxide and other environmental benefits.

Top taste!

Aside from the health benefits and environmental advantages, some people simply prefer the taste of organic food. We have featured organic products in two of the season's taste tests, and while neither of those set the world alight, we'd certainly be happy to try more.

Of course, you don't have to buy organic. It is generally more expensive, and not to everybody's taste - but if you get the chance, give it a go. You never know, you may find yourself jumping on the back of the organics bandwagon.
